ACE Tours continues its “On the Fence” Open Air Gallery Experience on Thursday, June 17 from 5:00 p.m. until dusk (8:00 p.m.) at Burnett Park, just off San Jose Blvd. and north of I-295.

Current weather forecasts from a variety of sources indicate that the rainy conditions that led to the shortened Klutho Park exhibition and the cancellation of the Wiley Road Park show are unlikely to cause similar problems this week.

As with all ACE Tours’ events, ON THE FENCE: Burnett is free, open to the public, and fully accessible. The exhibition features new and recent work by some of the area’s most noted artists and rising talents, including Tony RodriguesErin KendrickPatrick MikoMadeleine Peck WagnerAlma RamirezJoseph ShuckAysha Sara MiskinChristopher ClarkLiz Gibson and Jeff Whipple.

The Burnett Park show marks the next to last “On the Fence” exhibition for the season. The tour closes next Thursday, June 24, at Isle of Palms Park, 3780 Eunice Road, 32250.

ACE Tours’ “ON THE FENCE: Klutho” Exhibition Closes Early Due to Rain

Let’s call it a qualified success! After an hour or so of exhibition time enjoyed by about 40 attendees, ACE Tours’ “On the Fence: Klutho” Open Air Pop-Up Gallery Exhibition packed it in in the face of a very light but persistent storm front.

The sprinkles began about 20 minutes after hanging the show. Fortunately, the group was prepared for that contingency and quickly covered the art with vinyl sheeting in the hopes that the precipitation was just one of those kinda-never-really-develops Florida showers.

ACE Tours Co-Founder Mark Creegan lifts the vinyl sheeting to check on Christopher Clark‘s “Pandemic Baby” before persistent light showers forced the shutdown of the “On the Fence: Klutho” exhibition in the historic Springfield park.

The protective efforts were effective, and also provided patrons with an even more organic and interactive gallery experience than they expected when viewers were encouraged to carefully and briefly view the art beneath the sheeting. In the end, though, meteorological fortune was not on the exhibit’s side, and it was packed up early to ensure the safety of the art.

Progress, though, is still progress. The weather challenge this week was much improved over last week’s total cancellation of the Wiley Park event. It also offered some valuable, live-fire lessons and sparked more than one great idea for coping with inclement weather.

Perhaps the best part of the show, though, was the attendees who pitched in and helped take the art down quickly and safely when the closing decision was made. ACE Tours extends a special thanks to them; Jacksonville sure has a way of bringing out the best in its art lovers.

So if you weren’t one of the lucky ones who were able to catch the show this week, make plans now to come out next Thursday for ON THE FENCE: Burnett in Jacksonville’s Mandarin area.

Public Art Projection Project “Inside Out City” Prepares to Debut CCGJ Funded Exhibition

Inside Out City,” a locally developed, outdoor, public projection project, has announced an open call to artists in advance of its July 9 debut. The initiative is spearheaded by muralist, designer and educator Barbara Hionides and Jacksonville Science Festival Director Victor Toribio. The call to artists is open through June 21, 2021.

Described as “a public art project that digitally collects local art and projects them onto public spaces across the City of Jacksonville,” seeks digital submissions from artists and creators of all ages and skill levels, from total beginners to the most established.

Visual art, photography, poetry, spoken word, dance, song and animation are all viable forms for this piece, as long as they can be submitted in a digital format, including audio and video.

Like ACE Tours’ “On the Fence” Open Air Gallery Experience, “Inside Out City” is a participant in the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville‘s JAX Arts Project grant program. Another common feature of the two projects is the touring aspect.

“Inside Out City” public events will be grouped into a series of walking routes in public spaces; sites include Springfield, James Weldon Johnson Park, Arlington and Jacksonville Beach. The projections will take shape on trees, valleys, abandoned structures, blank walls, and forgotten billboards for a night of public viewing.

Something of a world citizen, Barbara has lived and studied a multiple of artistic disciplines in Philadelphia, New York, Berlin, and Greece before settling in Jacksonville in 2018. She’s currently an art teacher at The Foundation Academy, where she teaches K-12 students “how to think and create like artists.”

Submissions deadline for the open call is June 21, 2021. Find out more about “Inside Out City” at their website or their Instagram page.

Bright Ideas: Local Inspirations and Gracious Models for ACE Tours Adaptive Cultural Experiences

Although a newly minted organization, ACE Tours owes a weighty and sincere nod of gratitude to the local supporters, influencers and inspirations who came before us, helped to blaze the trail, and engaged the community with their outside-the-box projects, heartfelt work and positive example.

ACE Tours’ co-founders, Mark Creegan and Chaz. Bäck, have spent the better part of a decade vision casting, conceptualizing and nurturing the possibilities of alternative and adaptive presentations that maximize public contact and engagement with art and culture. We’ve been fortunate to have some of the area’s talented communicators, organizers and facilitators as catalysts and exemplars.

Northeast Florida curator and artist activist Shawana Brooks is a literal force for arts and culture in the area. Her most recent project — curating and managing The Corner Gallery at The Jessie Ball Dupont Center — is just the latest (and most unlikely to be the last!) in a long line of her outstanding and energizing cultural contributions to Jacksonville.

Whether helping to Color Jax Blue or serving as the Arts and Culture Developer for the Jax Makerspace inside the Main Branch of the Jacksonville Library, Shawana’s ability to capture the public’s imagination and engage people in meaningful interactions looms large in Northeast Florida.

But perhaps her most widely lauded project, the 6 Ft. Away Gallery, served us as a very tangible example of reaching out to the public in new and experimental ways. The 6 Ft. Away Gallery knitted a community together while helping build up and serve the people and artists within it. With this initiative, she and co-founder Roosevelt Watson III proved that people can and will come together to experience a highly accessible art experience, and that the benefit to strengthening the community is tangible.

Our humble and gracious thanks to Shawana for being one of ACE Tours’ inspiring lights.

In 2015, Yellow House‘s Hope McMath, then the director of The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, and Dolf James, co-founder of CoRK Arts District, led the charge of Jacksonville Outings, the local cohort of French artist Julien de Casabianca‘s Outings Project. The effect on the city was palpable.

Powered by works in the Cummer’s collection, the Outings Project allowed for large to massive reproductions of the museum’s paintings to be installed in a myriad of local urban settings, documented via photo and video, and networked with other sister groups working across the globe. This democratic implementation and non-traditional presentation created unexpected and impactful interactions with old masters’ works, maximizing engagement and impact.

We’re happy to tip our hats and offer our thanks to Hope, Dolf, and to all those who were involved with and participated in the Jax Outings Project.

Professor Dustin Harewood of FSCJ Kent Campus is no stranger to the minds of local arts enthusiasts. He’s been a spearhead for many highly regarded community arts projects, like The Black Beach project (with Malc Jax and Jordan Walter) at Cathedral Arts Project, multiple murals and public art works, and an abundance of gallery exhibitions.

But most notably in the context of this discussion, Dustin is a foundational block of the formation of ACE Tours’ “On the Fence” Open Air Pop-Up Gallery Experience. In the fall of 2020, longtime friends and tennis partners Dustin and ACE Tours’ co-founder Mark Creegan implemented “You Were There,” an experimental installation of their own work on the fences surrounding the Wiley Road Park tennis courts where they frequently met to play.

Harewood and Creegan’s “You Were There,” an ad hoc prototype of the series of the ACE Tours exhibitions, took only about an hour from installation to strike. And although it was only seen by the two artists and their documenting photographer, it provided a volley of inspiration, and served up a thrilling match point of logistics solutions for “On the Fence.”

Strong and heartfelt props to you, Harewood, for blazing the trail and helping ignite ACE Tours and our inaugural Adaptive Cultural Experience (ACE). We couldn’t have done it without you.

ACE Tours Retains Photographer Luis Rivera as Documentarian for “On the Fence” Series

Local arts and event photographer Luis Rivera has joined the ACE Tours team today to serve as the “On the Fence” project’s Official Documentarian. As owner and chief photographer of the IMAWHISTLE & CO. photo studio, Luis brings a keen eye and a unique perspective on visual storytelling to the Open Air Pop-Up Gallery Experience.

Luis’ work has been shaped by a variety of assignments, including fashion, concert, events, sports and portraiture. As documentarian, he will attend all exhibitions and chronicle the event in toto.

In addition to shooting the shows as events, Luis will visually document the entire process, including the individual works of art, the installation of the exhibits and studies of the park venues before the exhibition installations to illustrate the environmental contrast.

For additional information about Luis’ role in the “On the Fence” project, or to inquire about his availability for your photography and documentarian needs, contact him through his social media or via email.

Jeff Whipple and Liz Gibson Round Out “On the Fence” Slate of Core Artists

ACE Tours proudly announces the inclusion of award-winning artists Jeff Whipple and Liz Gibson as the final two core artists in the “On the Fence” Open Air Pop-Up Gallery Experience. Their work will be on display at all four of the touring project’s venues, presented every Thursday evening in June 2021.

As one of Northeast Florida’s most noted artists, Jeff’s work “engages viewers in imaginative contemplations about the weirdness and beauty of our brief appearance in the infinity of time.” Accomplished as a painter, illustrator, muralist, sculptor and playwright for over three decades, Jeff leverages the multidisciplinary nature of his practice to create pieces that combine both rapturous internal monologues and master level technical acuity.

Jeff’s most recent project is a series of animal-themed statues that were installed in Historic Roser Park in St. Petersburg, Florida, as part of the Collection of the City of St. Petersburg Public Art Program.

Perhaps best known for her visually stunning and emotionally engaging performance art, Liz speaks with a powerful voice as a visual artist in her own right. Drawing on the rich themes and iconography that fuel her “Deformance Art” events, her work shares a visual journey rife with confessional truths and teachable moments.

For more information about Jeff Whipple, visit his website; Find out more about Liz’s work at Deformance Art. Contact ACE Tours for additional info about their participation in “On the Fence.”

Artists Named for ACE Tours’ “On the Fence” Open Air Exhibition Series

Works by noted local artists Tony Rodrigues, Erin Kendrick, Patrick Miko, Madeleine Peck Wagner, Alma Ramirez, Joseph Shuck, Aysha Sara Miskin, and Christopher Clark will be featured in ACE Tours exhibition series “On the Fence.” The open air pop-up gallery exhibits are scheduled for every Thursday evening throughout June 2021.

In addition to these eight core artists, ACE Tours is currently in talks to add two more exceptional Northeast Florida artists to the tableaux of core artists for the series. All four “On the Fence” shows will include their work.

Following the finalization of the slate of core artists, ACE Tours will offer additional opportunities for local artists to join individual shows in Wiley Road Park, Klutho Park, Barnett Park and Isle of Palms Park. The forthcoming official Call to Artists will be available via online submission process.

Conceptualized and founded by organizers Mark Creegan and Chaz. Bäck, ACE Tours develops and presents adaptive cultural experiences that are shared uniquely in Jacksonville, Florida.

ACE Tours Announces Inaugural Exhibition Series “On the Fence”

Today, ACE Tours, a new Jacksonville-based arts and cultural organization, announced it will present a series of weekly pop-up outdoor art exhibitions in local city parks every Thursday evening throughout June 2021.

The touring series, On the Fence, is the inaugural Adaptive Cultural Experience (ACE) for the organization, and features new and recent work of ten accomplished core artists from Northeast Florida. The “Open Air Art Gallery Experience” features four individual one-evening, pop-up style shows utilizing the existing infrastructure of local parks for showcasing the work. All shows are open to the public from 5:00 p.m. until dusk (8:00 p.m.) and are weather dependent. Locations are:

  • Thursday, June 3 at Wiley Road Park, 6750 Wiley Road, 32210
  • Thursday, June 10 at Klutho Park, 204 West 3rd Street, 32206
  • Thursday, June 17 at Burnett Park, 3740 Burnett Park Road, 32257
  • Thursday, June 24 at Isle of Palms Park, 3780 Eunice Road, 32250

“The sheer size of Jacksonville is a unique branding element of our city,” said event co-organizer Chaz. Bäck. “But it can also be challenging for residents. We believe consistent cultural exhibitions can help unify Jacksonville’s many communities.”

“No one should miss out on great art and culture because they live too far away from an exhibition for it to be a fun and convenient experience. We believe that locally touring exhibits promote a more integrated cultural identity for the city and for the people of Jacksonville.”
